Notes blocks
A notes block lists the notes a search finds, right in a note. It's always up to date, so you never keep an index by hand. Use one for a diary, a log per subject or a list of plans.
To add one, click the notes block button in the formatting bar, next to the table button. You can also right-click in a note, or press Ctrl+K, and choose Insert notes block. The block searches for the note's first tag, and its settings open right away.
- Show as: List, Table or Month. The buttons in the block's header switch too.
- Notes tagged: the tags a note needs to show. With several tags, a note needs all of them.
- Leave out: notes with these tags don't show, such as
#template. - Columns: which columns a table has. Mare suggests a column for each group of tags under the search, such as Mood for
#diary/mood/calm. - Pill in each day: which tag a month shows in each day, such as the rating.
- Order: newest or oldest first.
- To change the settings later, click the settings button in the block's header.
- Click a note in the block to open it.
- A note never lists itself, so a note tagged
#diarycan hold a block of#diary.
The block's text
A notes block is a code block that starts with three backticks and the word notes. The settings write lines like these into it:
#diary -#template
show: table
columns: date, title, #diary/mood, #diary/rating
The first line is the search. It works like the search field, so words, -word and @todo work too. To change the text yourself, open the settings and choose Edit as text.
Dated notes
A note is dated when its title starts with a date written as 2026-10-27. The title "2026-10-27 Dentist" is dated too, so a day can have several notes. Today's note from Ctrl+D is dated.
- Dated notes come first, newest first. Choose Oldest first in the settings to turn that around.
- Month shows a calendar with each note in its day. Hover over an empty day and click New note to start one. It gets the date as its title and the block's tags. This works when the block searches for tags and nothing else.
- On a phone, Month shows the days with a dot for each day that has notes. Tap a day to see its notes under the calendar.
- Choose Pill in each day in the settings to show a tag in each day, such as 3 for
#diary/rating/3. - Titles with the date in another order, such as 10-23-2026, don't count. The block shows how many there are. Click Rename, or press Ctrl+K and choose Rename dated notes, to rename them to 2026-10-23. Mare asks first, and links to them update automatically. A title such as 03-04-2026 could be March or April. Mare uses the day the note was made to decide, and leaves it alone when that doesn't help.
Columns
Tick the columns a table shows in Columns, in the settings. A column comes last when you tick it.
| Column | Shows |
|---|---|
| Date | The date the title starts with |
| Note | The title without its date, or the first words of the note |
| Mood, Rating and others | The tags under that one, as pills: calm for #diary/mood/calm |
| Tags | Every tag, except the ones in the search |
| Created, Modified | When the note was made or last changed |
Until you pick columns, a table shows the date, the title and the tags. On a phone, columns that don't fit are left out from the end.
Tag columns are how you keep a mood, a rating or a subject with each note. Give a tag under them a colour in the sidebar and the pills get that colour too.
