What's new
What changed in each release. Mare updates automatically and shows the newest edition once after an update. You can read them all in Settings, and on this page.
Your own shortcuts
Your own shortcuts
Don't like a shortcut? You can now change it. Settings → Shortcuts lists every action with its keys.
- Click + next to an action, then press the keys. An action can have more than one shortcut
- Keys already taken? Mare says which action has them. Use it here instead moves them over
- The round arrow puts one action back. Reset all shortcuts puts them all back
- Search by name or by keys, such as "ctrl k"
- F1 to F12 work on their own, without Ctrl
- Copy, paste, select all, undo and redo are fixed, so they work the same as in every other app
- Each device keeps its own shortcuts. On a phone or tablet with a keyboard, the list shows the shortcuts Mare starts with
Move a note to the trash from the keyboard
Ctrl+Shift+Backspace moves the open note to the trash and opens the next one in the list. Ctrl+K → Move note to trash does the same. Pressed it by mistake? Ctrl+Z brings the note back. You can change the keys in Settings → Shortcuts.
Fixed
- AltGr and a letter on Windows no longer sets off a shortcut. A shortcut now needs exactly its own keys, so Ctrl+Shift+F and Ctrl+Shift+1, 2 and 3 no longer do anything
Links as cards
Links as cards
Type or paste a web address alone on a line, and Mare asks whether to show it as a card. A card shows the page's title, a short description, the site and the page's picture.
- Press Tab to make the card. Press Escape or click Keep link to keep the address
- On a phone or tablet the question is in the formatting bar
- Pick a style in Settings → Editor → Link cards: a row with the picture on the right, a large card with the picture on top, or one line. Each device keeps its own choice
- Click a card to open the page. Hover it and click the cross to turn it back into the address
- Right-click a card for Open link, Copy address and Show as a link. On a touch screen, press and hold the card
- Right-click an address alone on a line → Show as a card
- In a table, an address alone in a cell can be a card too, in the style you picked
- A card is a link in your note, written as
[Title](https://address)alone on a line. Other apps show it as a link with the page's title. The description and picture are stored with your workspace - Cards made with the globe button of the last version move into your note the first time you open it
A demo workspace
Want to look around before you write your own notes? Settings → Extras → Demo workspace installs a design student's semester: lecture notes, a studio project, tables and linked notes.
- You pick the name. Mare suggests "Semester 3"
- It's yours from there. The demo downloads from marenotes.ink once, opens as a new workspace and doesn't sync anywhere
Fixed
- Clicking the last column of a table sometimes put the caret in the first cell, and Tab couldn't reach it. That happened in rows with fewer cells than the table has columns. Mare now adds the missing cells when you click or Tab into them
- Home and End in a table cell now go to the start or end of the cell, with or without Shift. Press again for the start or end of the row
- Exported PDFs have their text again. The last update left all of it out
- Buttons now act only when you press and let go on the same button. Slide off before you let go to cancel
- Picking from a menu no longer presses a button of what it opens, and the click that opens a dialog or sheet no longer lands on it
- Dragging the version strip on a touch screen no longer slides the side panels in
Better tables, backlinks, spellcheck and more
A tidier sidebar
The top of the sidebar had three small buttons competing for space. Now each thing has one clear place.
- Your workspace is a button at the top, with its flag. Click it to switch workspaces or see all of them
- A search field is under it. It opens the same search as Ctrl+K
- The graph is now the Map. Its button is in the search field, and always there
- Prefer the strip of flags? Settings → Appearance → Switch workspaces from picks the top button or the side strip. It's one or the other
- Views are one list: All notes, Today, To do and Untagged, then Archive and Trash
- Settings moved to the bottom, next to sync
- Tags show how many notes they have. A folded tag counts everything under it. A thin guide line appears when you hover a nested tag or pick one, so you can see which branch you're in
- On a phone the sidebar uses the same rows, where it had tiles
Links show how far along a note is
A link to a note with todos now shows its progress. The icon before the title is a ring that fills as todos get done.
- A partly filled ring → that share of the todos is done
- A ticked disc → all done
- The note icon → the note has no todos
- A lock → the note is locked. It shows nothing until you unlock the workspace
- Links stay the same width, so nothing in your notes moves
Tables on a tablet
- The add-row and add-column bars are back under and beside the table, sized for a finger. On a phone both sit under the table
- Resize a column by dragging the line in the header. With a trackpad or mouse, any row works
- Fixed: in a table scrolled sideways, a tap now lands in the cell you tapped
- After picking from a dropdown or date picker, the cell stays selected and the table keeps its buttons, so you can add a row right away
- Tapping a dropdown or date cell no longer opens the keyboard. It opens when you tap the search field
- Tapping low on the screen now scrolls the note so your text stays above the keyboard
- Tapping a checkbox, fold arrow, link or tag no longer opens the keyboard
- Android: if you hide the keyboard yourself, a tap in the text brings it back
Tables everywhere
- Scrolling the page closes an open dropdown or date picker
- Clicking outside an open dropdown closes it and still does what you clicked: add a row, open another cell, place the caret. It no longer takes two clicks
- Fixed: clicking a column line without dragging no longer changes the column's width
Easier on a phone
- Dropdowns and date pickers open as a sheet at the bottom of the screen. The sheet is as tall as its options, and the note scrolls so the cell you tapped stays visible. Tap outside the sheet to close it
- The info panel is a card under its button. Tap outside it, pick a heading or go back to close it
- Swiping the note list or the sidebar in now dims the note and casts a shadow, so you can see what's on top
- Setting a password for locked notes now takes three short pages: the password, the password again, and a hint. A problem shows right under its field, and the buttons stay above the keyboard
- The welcome asks only for your name. The email field is gone
- Fixed: a tap could reach something hidden behind what you tapped, such as a button under the sidebar or a row scrolled behind a heading
- Fixed: tapping a dropdown cell with the keyboard open sometimes did nothing, or selected the cell's text
- Fixed: tapping the empty space after a cell's text could put the caret in the next cell
- Fixed: on iPhone and iPad, the keyboard could open with no caret in the note
- Fixed: the question before deleting a workspace ran off the screen and showed a long system path
On a Mac
- Paste images and files with Cmd+V. Screenshots, images copied from other apps and files copied in Finder all work
- Fixed: the paperclip button did nothing. It now opens the file dialog and shows a spinner while the dialog opens
- Fixed: after a screenshot shortcut such as Cmd+Shift+5, every click selected text until you pressed Shift again
Spellcheck
Mare now catches typos as you write, on every platform. Where your system has a spellchecker, Mare uses it. On Linux, Mare brings its own.
- Misspelled words are underlined the way your system does it: dots on Apple devices, a wavy line on Windows and Linux, a straight line on Android
- Right-click a word → suggestions, Add to dictionary and Ignore
- On a phone or tablet, tap the word → the formatting bar shows the suggestions. It stays above the keyboard and never covers the word
- Only your prose is checked. Code, links, tags, note names and file names are skipped
- The word you're typing isn't checked until you move on
- Several languages work together. A word is fine if any of your languages knows it
- Settings → Editor → Check spelling turns it off
How languages work on each platform:
- Mac → uses your Mac's spellchecker and its languages, and detects the language of each paragraph. Words you add are shared with your other apps
- iPhone and iPad → uses the system spellchecker in the languages of your keyboards
- Windows → uses the Windows spellchecker. Settings → Editor has a switch for each language
- Android → uses your device's spellchecker. If none is turned on, Settings tells you how to enable one
- Linux → pick from about ninety dictionaries under Settings → Editor → Show languages. Search by English or native name. Dictionaries download from marenotes.ink, stay on your device, and update weekly. New to Mare? The welcome asks which languages you write in and suggests the ones your system uses
The Linux dictionaries come from the LibreOffice project. Each has its own licence, which you can read under Settings → Extras.
Sync that tidies up after itself
A workspace synced with Google Drive, a shared folder, S3 or SFTP used to add one small file for every sync and never remove any. After a few weeks that was hundreds of files, and a new device had to read them all.
- Every 20 syncs, Mare saves a checkpoint: one file with the whole history
- A new device starts from the newest checkpoint, so it reads a handful of files
- Older files are removed once two checkpoints are newer than them. On Google Drive they go to the bin first
- Older versions of Mare keep syncing with the same workspace. Nothing needs to be migrated
- If a workspace ever needs a newer Mare, sync stops before changing anything and tells you to update
A nicer start on Android
While Mare loads on Android, you now see the sloop at sea, the app's name and a moving waterline. Before, it was only the logo. On a slow device, that's a friendlier wait.
Technical notes
- Fixed: a sync conflict in a long note was too slow to scroll. Mare now lays the text out once and draws only what's on screen
- Fixed: on iPhone and iPad, Mare used Greenwich time. "Today" could show yesterday for the first hours after midnight, and times were off. Mare now uses your device's time zone
Tables with column types
Columns for choices, checkboxes, dates and numbers
You can now give a table column a type, and its cells show their values that way. Hover over the column, click the arrow in its header, and pick a Type.
| Type | A cell shows | You change it by |
|---|---|---|
| Choice | one option from a list, as a pill in the option's colour | clicking the cell and picking from the dropdown |
| Checkbox | a box, ticked or not | clicking, or pressing Space |
| Date | a day in plain words: Tomorrow, Fri 20 Mar | clicking and picking a day in the date picker |
| Number | a number, right-aligned | typing it |
- A column you already have → make it a Choice and its values become the options, each with a colour
- Start typing in a choice cell → the dropdown opens and searches. You can add a name that isn't in the list yet from there
- Allow multiple options → a switch in the column's menu, for a column of labels or topics
- Options → rename one and every cell that had it updates. You can also change its colour, move it up or down, or delete it
- Dates → pick from the date picker, or type
14 oct,tomorrowor2026-10-14. Mark past dates turns past dates red - Numbers → give them a unit. Show the sum, average, minimum, maximum or count under the column
Your notes stay plain text
None of this is written into the note in a way that could confuse another app. A cell still says Done, Bug, Urgent, [x], 2026-10-14 or 12.5. The table reads the same in any markdown app.
- A column's type, its options and their colours are stored beside the note, under the column's name. They sync with the note
- Rename a column in its header and it keeps its type
- Two tables in one note with a column of the same name share its options
- A value that isn't one of the options still shows, as a pill without a colour
Tables are easier to work on
- The header → looks different from the rows, and shows each column's type as a small icon before its name
- The arrow in a header → opens everything about that column: type, sort, align, insert, move, width, delete. It replaces the three dots beside the table
- Sort ascending and Sort descending → reorder the note's rows by that column. Numbers sort by value, dates by day, choices by the order of their options
- The dots beside a row → insert a row above or below, move it, delete it
- The bar under a table → adds a row. The bar beside it adds a column
- On a phone or tablet → tap a cell to show the buttons for its column and its row, sized for a finger. Dropdowns and menus fill the whole screen
- A column's width now stays with the column when you move it or add others beside it
- Reset table size is in the right-click menu of a table
A workspace downloads from Google Drive much faster
A workspace in Google Drive or an S3 bucket downloads piece by piece, one piece for every time it was synced. Mare now asks for eight pieces at a time instead of one.
- A workspace that took close to a minute to open on a new device now takes about ten seconds
- Downloading the workspace: 23 of 68 → the start screen shows how far along it is, above a progress bar
- A device that hasn't synced for a long while catches up just as much faster
- Fixed: the progress bar of an update download showed more than had been downloaded
Links to notes stand out
A link to another note no longer looks like any other coloured word. It now sits on a small plate with square corners, with a note icon before it. You can tell it at a glance from a tag on its round pill and from a web link.
- Click it, on the words or on the icon, to open the note
- Put the caret in it to see and change what's written
The Android app updates automatically
The Android app from marenotes.ink now updates the way the desktop apps do. It checks for a newer version when it starts and every six hours, and downloads it in the background.
- Mare x is ready → a card says so when the download is done. Install hands it to Android, which installs it. Mare closes while that happens, and is the new version when you open it again
- The first time, Android asks whether Mare may install apps, and then whether to update. After that, updates install without questions
- Settings → Updates is on a phone and tablet too, with the switch, the channel and Check now
- A phone only installs a newer version over an older one. If you're on the nightlies and pick Stable, you stay on your version until a stable release has passed it
- Android only accepts an update signed with the same key as the installed app, so only a real Mare can replace it
Ballast looks away
Ballast, the seal, now does more than stand there.
- A locked note → he's larger, beside the lock, and covers his eyes while you type the password. Half a second after the last key, he peeks
- The greeting → he comes up in front of the boat, waves, and writes along while you type your name
- The flipper that looked like a foot is gone, from the app and from every picture he's in
The graph, a tap away on a phone or tablet
On a phone or tablet, the Graph button is now in the header of the sidebar from the start. You no longer have to switch it on first.
- A device that already has its settings keeps them → switch on Graph button from the search
- A locked note is now in the graph and in the backlinks, with the notes it links to, before you enter its password
Unlocking no longer freezes the screen
- Fixed: the whole screen froze for a moment while Mare made the key from a password. The screen now keeps drawing, and Mare shows that it's trying the password
- Fixed: saving and syncing a large workspace froze a tablet for seconds at a time. Mare now reads what's in a change without opening every file
- Fixed: a sync with a locked note open kept looking for changes and never ended. It now ends, and leaves the locked note alone
- A sync that fails on its last step now says so and stops
Backstage, for when something goes wrong
Settings → Extras → Backstage opens behind a warning, and fits a phone.
- Log → what Mare did, to send along when you report a problem
- Sync history → the changes and merges of a workspace as a timeline. It shows where this device is and what it last downloaded
- A view of frames, memory and processor
Technical notes
- The Android app now shows that an update was handed to the system and is being installed. It no longer shows nothing until Android takes over
- Fixed: a password field on Android now takes one letter at a time. With a keyboard that composes its words, it typed the whole word again at every key
- On a phone or tablet, Mare now says "this device" for where it runs
- Notes that link in a circle → Fixed: following links round to a note already beside the page closed Mare. It now goes back to that note
Ctrl+K does more, and themes with a texture
Ctrl+K finds commands too
The search under Ctrl+K now also finds tags, themes, workspaces and commands, each kind under its own heading. Some results have more inside. Press Enter to open them.
side→ Sidebar, with a switch that shows whether it's visible. Enter flips it. Note list and the on/off settings work the same- A tag → Enter opens its notes
- Theme → Enter opens the themes. Each theme previews as you move over it. Enter keeps it, Escape restores the old one
- Workspace, History, Graph, Sync now and New note are there too
- Backspace in an empty field goes back out
- Holding an arrow key now moves quickly through a list, here and everywhere else
In a narrow window, click the left side of the window to pull in the note list. Click again for the sidebar.
A better graph
The graph now opens with every note in view, however few or many there are. It's drawn on a sea chart, in the app's hand-drawn style and your theme's colours.
- Your notes are the land → a coast runs around them, and depth lines around the coast
- Beyond lies open water → a grid, ripples, and soundings that grow the further you are from land
- Here and there something worth marking → an island, rocks, a buoy, a boat under sail, and now and then Ballast, up for a look
- The chart stays clear of every note, line and name. It moves and zooms with the graph
- Ctrl+K → Graph opens it, whether or not its button is in the sidebar
A start screen that lists each workspace once
Fixed: a workspace could show up several times on the start screen, each with its own date. It happened most on an iPhone or iPad. There, the system moves the app's files to another folder with every update, and Mare treated the workspace in the new folder as a new one.
- Every workspace is listed once, with the date it was last opened. Duplicates are removed the first time the list is read
- After an app update on a phone or tablet, Mare finds the workspace it had open again
- The same goes for a folder reached by two paths: through a link, or with different capitalisation
- Swipe a workspace to the left → Remove takes it off the list. Delete deletes it from the device, after asking. These are the same actions as in the three-dots menu, which is still there when you use a pointer
Themes with a texture
Six new themes use a texture instead of a flat colour: wood, stone or cloth for the sidebar, paper for the page.
| Theme | The sidebar | The page |
|---|---|---|
| Bookshelf | walnut, with a knot or two | cream paper |
| Chart table | a sea chart, with land, shoals and depth lines | faint chart lines |
| Teak deck | scrubbed planks | paper |
| Sailcloth | red tanbark canvas, with unbleached canvas for the list | paper |
| Slate | split slate | darker slate. This is the dark one |
| Marble | white marble with grey veins | white paper |
Settings → Appearance → Show all themes. They're at the end, under Textured themes.
- Easy to read → every section and tag in the sidebar sits on its own small plain plate. Turn off Label backgrounds to remove them and see the bare texture
- Soft sidebar → the sidebar turns plain. The list and the page keep their texture
- On a Mac → the bar at the top of the window is no longer grey. It matches what's under it, in every theme: the sidebar's colour or wood on the left, the page on the right
- On Windows 11 → the title bar takes the colour of the page
Technical notes
- No git needed → Mare no longer needs the git program on your computer, which most computers don't have. Git is now built in, on every system. Nothing changes in your workspaces: they're the same git repositories as before
- Your system's keychain → passwords and keys for sync are now stored in Keychain on a Mac, the Credential Manager on Windows, and GNOME Keyring or KWallet on Linux. Mare finds the ones you saved before and moves them there the first time they're needed
- Cmd+Q → quits Mare on a Mac
- A window of the right size on Windows → Fixed: on a screen set to 125% or more, the window opened too small and the first screen didn't fit. It now opens at the right size, in the middle of the screen. The same on Linux under X11
- From a store → a copy from the Microsoft Store or a package manager is updated by that store. Settings → Updates now says so and offers nothing else
- Your SSH settings → for sync over SSH, Mare now reads the user and the key files for a host from
~/.ssh/config. It already read the host's real name and port there
A seal on the icon, and a graph of your notes
A new icon, with a seal on it
Mare's icon is now Ballast, a harbour seal who followed the sloop out of the harbour one Saturday and never went home. The sloop is still Probably Fine, and still sails through the app.
- Look for the seal instead of the sail: in the dock, on the taskbar and on your phone
- Ballast keeps watch on the foredeck on the start screen and sleeps there when no note is open. He also shows beside the lock of a locked note
- Nothing else moved. Your notes are where they were
One button to open or create a workspace
The start screen had six ways to get a workspace, and each asked much the same. Now it has one: Open or create workspace. It lists the places a workspace can live. Each place has its own small sheet.
- On this device → shows the workspaces in your Mare folder that aren't in the list yet, and a dashed card for a new one. Open another folder opens one from anywhere else
- Google Drive → shows who is signed in and every workspace in that Drive as a card, with when it last changed. Pick a card to open that workspace here, or the dashed card to start a new one
- Git repository, Shared folder, SFTP server, S3 bucket → fill in the location and Mare looks there. If it finds a workspace, Mare downloads it. If the location is empty, Mare creates a new one. You no longer have to say which of the two you're doing
- The folder where the workspace is stored on this device is shown on one line under its name. Change opens it
- In the list, an icon next to each workspace shows where it syncs. In the switcher, the same icon is in a small badge on the corner of each flag, and next to the name when you hover over a flag
- New here? The welcome ends on this same screen, so there's one way to learn
Emoji by name
Type a colon and the start of an emoji's name. Mare suggests the emoji that match, each with its name.
:ey→ 👀:eyes:, 👁️:eye:, 👓:eyeglasses:and more- Up and Down choose, Enter or Tab inserts the emoji, Escape closes the suggestions. It's the same popup as for
#and[[ - A word that describes an emoji finds it too:
:happysuggests 😄 - The names are the ones GitHub and Slack use
Your notes as a graph
See how your notes connect. Every note is a dot, and every link between two notes is a line. Notes that many others link to grow larger and move to the middle. Notes with no links yet sit around the edge.
- Settings → Appearance → Graph view
- Click the new button at the top of the sidebar
- Hover over a note → it and the notes it's linked to light up, with their names
- Click a note → it opens
- Scroll to zoom, drag to move around. On a tablet or a phone, pinch and drag
- A tag you gave a colour colours its notes
It's off until you switch it on, and uses nothing while it's closed.
A large workspace opens at once
A workspace with thousands of notes now opens straight away the first time you open it on a computer. Every note is in the list, and Mare reads them in while you look around.
- The bottom of the sidebar shows how far along it is
- Search and tags fill up as it goes
- Sync waits until it's done
A line break without a new paragraph
Shift+Enter starts a new line without starting a new paragraph. The lines stay together, with no gap between them.
- In a table cell, it gives the cell a second line. Enter still takes you to the cell below
- Arrow keys and Backspace treat the break as one character
- In the file it's written as
<br>, which other markdown apps read the same way
Also in tables:
- Columns you can resize → drag the line between two columns. On a tablet or a phone, long-press the line and then drag. Double-click or double-tap the line to reset the column's width. Reset table size in the table's ⋯ menu resets all of them. Widths are saved with your notes and are the same on every device
- A table wider than the page now scrolls sideways to show the whole cell you move into, with Tab, the arrow keys or a click
- Fixed: typing a space in a cell no longer sends the caret to the far edge of the cell
- A long word without a space, such as a path or an address, is no longer cut off. Its column grows to fit the whole word. If the table then doesn't fit on the page, it scrolls sideways
- A word too long for the page itself, in a table or in the text, breaks at the end of the line
A sync panel that gets out of the way
- A cross in its corner closes it. Escape and a click beside it still close it too
- While a sync runs, the panel says what it's doing. It no longer says everything is in sync
- After a successful sync, it shows how it went and then fades away
- Ctrl+S now shows right away that the sync has started. It no longer waits for the other side to answer
Quicker
- The wheel → Fixed: a hard spin scrolled slowly at first and then all at once. Every turn of the wheel now counts right away
- A large workspace → opening one with thousands of notes for the first time takes a fifth of the time it took
- At rest → an idle Mare window now uses no processor at all. On some systems it kept redrawing, which drained a laptop battery for nothing
- A very long note → takes about half the work to draw, so it scrolls more smoothly
AI agents, and more kinds of picture
AI agents
An AI assistant that runs on your computer can now work with your notes. Ask it what you wrote about something, or tell it to leave you a note. It does that in Mare.
- Settings → AI agents → Allow AI agents
- Add next to the assistant you use → Claude Code, the Claude desktop app or Codex
- Ask it something about your notes
What it can do:
- search your notes and read them
- start a new note with tags, so it shows up where you look
- add to a note, change one, tag one
- link one note to another → it writes
[[Title]], and Mare turns it into the link you get from picking a note after[[ - add a picture or a file to a note → from the web or from your computer, at the place and width you want
What it can't do:
- see a locked note. To an assistant, locked notes don't exist
- write anything, once you switch Agents may write off
- leave the workspace that is open, unless you switch All workspaces on
It's off until you switch it on. Mare sends nothing anywhere for it. The assistant asks on your own computer, and Mare answers there.
Pictures from the web
A picture you write or paste into a note by its web address, as , no longer shows as an empty box. Mare now downloads it and stores it with the note, like a picture you dragged in.
- It syncs with the note and shows without a connection
- It stays when the site it came from takes it down
- Mare doesn't download from an address on your own computer or home network
Drawings in SVG
A logo, an icon or a diagram saved as SVG now shows as a picture in a note and in a PDF. It stays sharp when you make it larger.
- Shapes, lines, colours and gradients are drawn
- Text set in a font is left out. So are filters and styles from a stylesheet. A drawing that depends on those shows without them
Three Gruvbox themes
The warm, low-glare colours many people know from their code editor, now for your notes.
| Theme | Feels like |
|---|---|
| Gruvbox Light | cream paper and dark brown ink |
| Gruvbox Medium | the dark Gruvbox most people use |
| Gruvbox Dark | the same, on a darker background |
Settings → Appearance → Show all themes.
A welcome that asks where
The welcome now asks where your notes should live before it makes your first workspace: on this device, or in your Google Drive. S3, SFTP and a folder of notes you already have are one click further.
A callout you can type
Type > [!TIP] and press Enter to start writing the callout's text. Fixed: Enter no longer removes the line.
- It works for every kind: NOTE, TIP, IMPORTANT, WARNING and CAUTION
- Enter on an empty line of the callout ends it, the same as in a quote
A new look for Mare
Mare has a new look. Everything is where it was, and it works as it did. It just looks more like Mare now.
A lighter window
The sidebar and the note list now have a light background, so the page is the brightest thing in the window. The note you have open stands out in the list and joins the page.
Liked the darker sidebar? Settings → Appearance → Sidebar → Coloured brings it back, in any theme.
More about each note in the list
Each note in the list now shows:
- when it was last changed, next to its title
- an arrow while it has changes waiting to sync
- its tags, each in the colour you gave it
Formatting within reach
The formatting bar is still at the bottom of the page, always there to click. The right-click menu now has headings, lists and todos too.
A tidier sidebar
All notes and Today are at the top. The filters (to do, no tag yet, archive, trash) follow under their own small heading.
Extras
Settings has a new page at the bottom of its list: Extras. It holds things nobody needs and some people like:
- Show on Discord → shows your friends on Discord that you're writing in Mare, and for how long. It never shows what you write or what anything is called. It includes a button to Mare's website. It's on in a new install, and one switch turns it off
- Open-source licences → the fonts and the code Mare is built with, and the terms their makers share them under
Panes that follow your fingers
Swipe sideways with two fingers on a trackpad to pull in the note list and the sidebar from the left, one at a time. Swipe back to push them out again.
In a window too narrow to fit them beside the page, they no longer disappear. They slide over the page instead. Click beside one to close it.
Swipe a note
Drag a note in the list to the left, or swipe it with two fingers. This shows the actions you use most on a note:
- Lock or unlock
- Archive, or take it back out of the archive
- Trash → and in the trash, restore or delete for good
A note now opens when you release it, not when you press it. A press can still become a drag.
A proper welcome
The first time you open Mare, it greets you and asks your name. You can skip that. Then it takes you straight into a first workspace with the tour.
Mare no longer stops a sync to ask for a name and an email. It uses the name you gave at the welcome, or the Google account you sign in with. If it has neither, it makes up a name from your computer's name.
Smaller things
A new install syncs automatically every 5 minutes. Settings you already have stay as they are
Exporting a long note now shows that the PDF is being written
Click a tag in a note to see every note with that tag
A note you start while viewing a tag begins with that tag
While tag or link suggestions are open, the Right arrow moves the caret on in the text and closes the suggestions
Fixed: on a Mac or on Windows, signing in to Google Drive worked, but syncing then said the sign-in had expired. The same happened with S3 keys and SFTP passwords there. If this affected you, sign in once more
The theme Ancestors was redrawn and is now Lantern: a navy edge and a brass accent. If you used it, you have the new one
Headings have a small mark in the margin instead of the H1, H2, H3 labels. The longer the mark, the bigger the heading
Text copied in one workspace and pasted into another now brings its pictures and files along
Fixed: nested tags stayed hidden after you collapsed a tag in the sidebar and expanded it again
Fixed: the caret in an empty table cell was at the wrong end of the cell
Fixed: while typing a tag, the caret sat just outside its pill
The grey placeholder bars for a locked note's text now look right in dark themes
OpenDyslexic is a new font under Settings → Editor. Its letters are weighted at the bottom, which many people with dyslexia find easier to read
Google Drive, and tidier tables
Sync with Google Drive
You can now sync with nothing but a Google account. No git host, server or bucket needed.
- The line at the bottom of the sidebar → Google Drive
- Sign in with Google → your browser opens → allow access
- Back in Mare → Connect
Your workspace now has a copy in your own Drive, in a folder called Mare.
- One sign-in covers all your workspaces. Each gets its own folder
- On another computer → Add from storage → Google Drive → sign in → pick the workspace from the list
- History, merging and locked notes work the same as with every other kind of sync
Tables keep to their columns
Long text in a table cell now wraps inside the cell, and the row grows to fit it. It no longer runs into the next column.
Tables wider than the page scroll sideways. Drag the bar under the table, use a trackpad, or hold Shift and turn the wheel. The table scrolls along as you move the caret through it.
Pictures in tables
Put the caret in a cell → paste or drop a picture. It shows small, inside the cell.
Pictures side by side
Drag a picture onto the left or the right half of another one. A line shows which side it will land on. Drop it, and the two share a row. If they're too wide together, both shrink just enough to fit.
A closer look
Click a picture to open it large, over the whole window. Scroll to zoom in on the spot under the pointer. Drag to move around. Press Escape or click beside the picture to go back. Pictures in table cells open the same way.
Smaller things
Fixed: on a Mac or on Windows, signing in to Google Drive worked, but syncing then said the sign-in had expired. The same happened with S3 keys and SFTP passwords there. If this affected you, sign in once more
Right-click a picture → Copy image copies it to the clipboard, ready to paste into a chat or an email
Right-clicking one of several pictures in a row now selects the one you clicked
A simpler start
New workspaces start on this device
The "New workspace" window now opens on On this device instead of a form asking where to sync. The workspace is stored on your computer, and there's nothing to fill in.
Want it synced? Pick a sync option right there, or later from the line at the bottom of the sidebar. The options are now ordered from least setup to most.
Smaller things
- The sync window is tidier. When everything is in sync, it says so and shows one button. It only asks you to describe a change when there is one
- The sync window is also a little wider, so nothing in it gets cut off
- Syncing to a USB stick or a shared folder is still available under Folder
A tour, and four new themes
Let Mare show you around
New to Mare, or never quite got the hang of tags? There's now a one-minute tour. It puts handwritten notes next to the things worth knowing, with an arrow to each. It ticks them off as you try them.
- It starts automatically the first time a workspace is opened on a computer
- To start it yourself → Settings → What's new? → Take the tour
- Nothing is locked while it runs. Skip a step or end the tour whenever you like
Four new themes
| Theme | Feels like |
|---|---|
| VS Code | the dark editor half the world writes code in |
| IntelliJ | the dark look of the JetBrains tools |
| Cupertino | a Mac in light mode |
| Cupertino Dark | a Mac in dark mode |
That makes thirteen themes. Appearance now shows the first few and fades out the rest. Show all themes shows every one. The theme you use is always first.
On a Mac, shortcuts use Command
Fixed: shortcuts on a Mac used Control instead of Command. Cmd+N now makes a note and Cmd+K searches. The full list is under Settings → Shortcuts.
Tags with icons and colours, and a way back
Tags, your way
You can now put the tags in the sidebar in your own order and give each one an icon and a colour.
- Drag a tag up or down to reorder it
- Right-click a tag → Icon and colour → pick from 54 icons and eight colours
The colour also shows wherever the tag appears in your notes. You can see at a glance what a note is about. Nested tags use their parent's colour until you give them their own. All of it syncs.
Follow a link, keep your place
Click a link to another note. The note you came from stays beside it as a narrow spine. Each link you follow adds another spine. Click a spine to go back.
Picking a note from the list or from search starts fresh.
A timeline for a note's history
Open a note's clock tab and a timeline appears under the page. It has a mark for every earlier version and a dot for now. Click a mark or drag along the timeline to watch the note change. Click the dot to return to now.
Switch between workspaces
Have more than one workspace? They now sit at the left edge of the sidebar, each with its own small flag. Click a flag to switch. Click the empty tile below them to add another.
Don't want it? Turn it off under Settings → Appearance → Workspace switcher.
A softer sidebar
Settings → Appearance → Sidebar → Soft replaces the dark sidebar with a light background beside the page. It works in every theme. The note you have open stands out in the list and joins the page.
Smaller things
- A renamed tag keeps its icon, colour and position
- Settings pages scroll when they're taller than the window
- The sea on the start screen now reaches both edges at any window width
- The manual covers all of the above
Sync wherever you like
Syncing no longer needs a git host. A workspace can now sync with four kinds of storage:
| Kind | What it is |
|---|---|
| Git | A repository at a git host, as before |
| Folder | A USB stick or a shared folder |
| SFTP | A folder on a server, over SSH |
| S3 | A bucket (Amazon, R2, Backblaze) |
Your history, merging and locked notes work the same on all four.
Try it
- New workspace → pick a kind under "Sync with"
- An existing workspace → the line at the bottom of the sidebar → pick a kind → Connect
- On another computer → Add from storage on the start screen (renamed from Clone repository)
Smaller things
- On the start screen, the
…on a workspace's row can forget the workspace or delete it from this device - Adding a workspace now shows that Mare is busy, so a slow one no longer looks stuck
- Two computers with nothing new no longer send each other empty changes on every sync
- The manual has a new Sync chapter
Workspaces that sync with git keep working as before. You don't need to change anything.
Locks, time travel and a manual
Locked notes
Right-click a note → Lock note. Mare encrypts its text and attachments, on this device and everywhere they sync to. There's one password per workspace, and a recovery code in case you forget it.
Going back in time
Every sync keeps the previous version of a note. Click the round button at the top right → the clock tab → pick a moment. You can see what changed and restore it if you like.
Also new
- Find and replace → Ctrl+H
- PDF export with an optional front page and table of contents → the arrow at the top right of a note
- Four more themes → Blossom, Periwinkle, Papyrus and Vampire
- A manual in every workspace
- Ctrl+Tab steps through your notes
