Manual / Mare 0.21

The Mare manual

Ahoy. This is everything Mare does, in the order you're likely to need it. Read the first two parts and you can start writing. Come back for the rest when you wonder "can it do that?" (it probably can).

This manual comes with the app, as a note in every new workspace. These pages have the same text.

  1. The window, in ten seconds

Mare has three columns, left to right:

  2. Writing

Mare speaks markdown, and is polite enough to hide it. Type the markers to get the formatting. Move the caret back into the text to show the markers again…

  3. Tables

A table is rows of cells. In Mare, each column can have a type: choice, checkbox, date or number. The note itself stays plain text.

  4. Tags

There are no folders. Type #work anywhere in a note and the note is filed under work. That's the whole system, and yes, it's enough. The sidebar builds a…

  5. Linking notes

Type [[ → start typing a title → pick the note → done. The link shows as a small pill with a note icon in front. That's how you tell it from a tag or a web…

  6. Pictures and files

Two pictures side by side? Drag one onto the left or right half of the other. They then share a row, and shrink if they need to. Right-click a picture → Copy…

  7. Finding things

Ctrl+K searches every note. It checks titles first, then the text, and shows where it matched. Use the arrow keys to choose and Enter to open. Hold an arrow…

  8. Pin, archive, trash

Right-click a note in the list:

  9. Sync

A workspace is a folder on your device. Sync copies it to a location you choose, and from there to your other devices:

  10. Going back in time

Every sync keeps the previous version of a note. Click the round button at the top right → the clock tab → pick a moment.

  11. Locked notes

    Some notes are nobody's business. Right-click a note → Lock note .

  12. AI agents

An AI assistant that runs on your computer, such as Claude or Codex, can work with your notes. It can search them, read a note, write a new note, add to one,…

  13. Export as PDF

Click the button with the arrow at the top right of a note → Export .

  14. Make it yours

Open Settings with the gear at the bottom of the sidebar, or press Ctrl+comma.

  15. Shortcuts

On a Mac, use Cmd instead of Ctrl. These are the shortcuts Mare starts with. You can change them on a computer.

  16. Where your notes live

Not inside Mare. A workspace is an ordinary folder:
